Grand Hyatt Shanghai: Living Above the Clouds in the Heart of Pudong

There are hotels… and then there are experiences that quite literally elevate you. My stay at Grand Hyatt Shanghai was exactly that—an ascent into a world where luxury meets the sky. Located inside the iconic Jin Mao Tower, one of the tallest skyscrapers in Shanghai, this hotel doesn’t just offer a stay—it offers a perspective. A rare one.

A Room Suspended Between Sky and City

My room was located on the 61st floor. Yes, sixty-first. At that height, the city transforms into something almost surreal. Unfortunately, during most of my stay, Shanghai was wrapped in clouds—soft, dense, almost dreamlike. And yet, in fleeting moments, the sky opened just enough to reveal what I can only describe as one of the most breathtaking views you can have in Shanghai. The skyline, the Huangpu River, the endless energy of Pudong… all revealed themselves in glimpses, like a secret you have to be patient enough to witness. And honestly, that made it even more magical.

Grand Club Lounge: Where Mornings Become Rituals

One of the highlights of my stay was the Grand Club Lounge. From the moment you step in, everything feels calm, refined, and effortlessly luxurious. The breakfast? Simply impeccable. A perfect balance between Western and Asian options, executed with precision and freshness. It’s not just about eating—it’s about starting your day in a space that feels curated, quiet, and elevated above the city's rush.

Dining at 67 Floors Above Reality

If there’s one experience you absolutely cannot miss, it’s dining at Club Jin Mao, located on the 67th floor. This is where gastronomy meets altitude. The setting alone is spectacular, but what truly stands out is the refinement of the cuisine. Every dish feels intentional, delicate, and deeply rooted in Chinese culinary tradition while maintaining a modern elegance. The flavors are layered, precise, and beautifully presented—an experience that feels both luxurious and authentic.

A Cultural Moment Inside the Atrium

One of the most unexpected and memorable moments of my stay happened right inside the hotel’s iconic atrium. On Sundays, the hotel hosts cultural performances ("Arts in Patio"), in collaboration with Shanghai Oriental Art Center and I had the chance to witness a Chinese opera performance. Imagine this: the soaring architecture of the atrium, the elegance of traditional Chinese opera, and a refined tea and dining experience accompanying it. It felt timeless. Almost cinematic. A true immersion into Chinese culture—elevated, curated, and unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

The Grand Hyatt Shanghai is not just about luxury—it’s about perspective, both literally and emotionally. Even with the clouds, or maybe because of them, this stay felt intimate, unique, and slightly surreal. It’s a place where architecture, culture, and refinement come together to create something truly special. And if you’re lucky enough to catch the skyline at the right moment… you’ll understand exactly why this might just be one of the most beautiful views in Shanghai.
